In a shocking incident in Uttar Pradesh, a 25-year-old woman was allegedly raped by her father-in-law at gunpoint. The situation took a further traumatic turn when her husband, upon being informed, pronounced instant triple talaq over the phone, according to the First Information Report (FIR) filed by the victim.
Incident Details
The victim, a resident of a village in Uttar Pradesh, reported that her father-in-law had been harassing her for several days. On the night of the incident, he allegedly entered her room, threatened her with a gun, and raped her. She immediately called her husband, who was working in another city, to inform him of the assault. Instead of offering support, the husband reportedly said, "I divorce you," repeating it three times to give triple talaq, and disconnected the call.
Legal Action
The woman filed a complaint at the local police station, leading to the registration of an FIR under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including rape and criminal intimidation, as well as provisions of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, which criminalizes instant triple talaq. Police have launched an investigation and are searching for the accused father-in-law, who is absconding. The husband is also being sought for questioning.
The case highlights the continued prevalence of domestic violence and the misuse of religious practices, despite legal bans on instant triple talaq. Authorities have assured strict action against the perpetrators.
