Undertrial Prisoner Dies in Sultanpur Jail, Family Challenges Official Account

An undertrial prisoner held in Sultanpur district jail passed away under mysterious conditions early Saturday morning. The jail administration stated that the inmate died from a heart attack. However, his family members strongly contest this explanation.

Details of the Deceased and Case Background

The deceased, Shailendra Singh, was 41 years old and hailed from Amethi district. He faced trial in an attempted murder case that was nearly two decades old. Singh had been incarcerated since March 27. His next court appearance was scheduled for January 19.

Shailendra Singh leaves behind a wife and three young children. His family described him as a healthy individual with no history of serious medical conditions.

Family's Account and Suspicious Circumstances

According to relatives, Singh spoke with his wife over the phone on Friday evening. During that conversation, he did not mention any health problems or complaints.

On Saturday morning, a relative named Ashish Singh received a call from the SHO of Dhammour police station. The officer informed him about Shailendra's death.

Ashish Singh recounted that when he asked for details regarding the cause of death, he was told to contact jail authorities directly. He stated, "When we reached the hospital, we were told that Shailendra was brought dead. This clearly indicates that he died inside the jail premises."

Regular Visits and Health Claims

Family members visited Shailendra Singh regularly while he was in custody. His wife met him twice each week. Other relatives visited two to three times per month.

During these visits, they said he never complained of any serious health issues. The family emphasized, "Even during court hearings, he would say he was fine."

Police Response and Post-Mortem

Sultanpur Kotwali Nagar police confirmed that the body has been sent for a post-mortem examination. The procedure aims to determine the exact cause of death. Authorities stated that further action will be taken once the post-mortem report is received.

The incident has raised questions about the conditions and medical oversight within the jail facility. The family's doubts highlight a growing demand for transparency in such cases.
