Mangaluru Jail Assault: Undertrial Attacked, 6 Inmates Named
Undertrial assaulted in Mangaluru District Jail

A serious case of assault on an undertrial prisoner has been reported from the District Jail in Mangaluru, leading to a formal police complaint and a hospital visit for the victim.

Sequence of Events Inside the Jail

The incident unfolded on the evening of December 14. According to police records, an undertrial prisoner named Ahmad Shabeeth was admitted to the jail at 5:20 pm. His admission followed the orders of the II Additional District and Sessions Court, Mangaluru, in connection with a case registered at the Kankanady Town Police Station under the stringent NDPS Act.

Shabeeth was initially lodged in the second cell of the jail's 'A' block. The situation turned violent shortly after, at approximately 5:55 pm. Another undertrial prisoner from the same block, identified as Mohammed Harshad, allegedly took Shabeeth from his cell to the fourth cell located on the upper floor.

Attack and Swift Rescue by Jail Staff

It was at this location that a group of other inmates allegedly attempted to assault Ahmad Shabeeth. The group reportedly included Moyiddin Faraz, Arafath Ali, Paresh, Mohammed Mustafa, and Safwan, along with a few other prisoners.

Alert on-duty jail staff noticed the commotion and rushed to the spot. They successfully intervened, rescued Shabeeth from the assailants, and brought him out of the block to safety. Following the incident, Jail Superintendent Sharanabasappa, based on information from his staff, arranged for the injured prisoner to be taken to Wenlock District Hospital under official escort at 6:25 pm for necessary medical treatment.

Victim Names Assailants After Initial Hesitation

After receiving treatment and returning to the jail, the complainant official questioned Shabeeth about the identity of his attackers. Initially, the assaulted prisoner did not disclose any details. However, on Sunday (the next day), when questioned again, Shabeeth provided a statement.

He explicitly stated that Mohammed Harshad, along with the others, had assaulted him and even issued death threats. This testimony formed the basis for the formal legal action. Consequently, a case has been registered at the Barke Police Station in Mangaluru, and an investigation into the jail assault is now underway.
