Trichy Court Convicts Two, Including Serial Offender, in 2019 Gold Chain Snatching
Two men get 1-year jail for 2019 Trichy chain snatching

A court in Trichy delivered a verdict on Tuesday, convicting two men for a brazen gold chain snatching incident that occurred back in 2019. One of the convicted individuals is a known serial offender. The judicial magistrate sentenced both accused to undergo one year of rigorous imprisonment for their crime.

The Day of the Crime: A Swift Theft on a Busy Road

The incident dates back to July 5, 2019. A woman named Vijaya, a resident of Inamkulathur, was crossing the busy Trichy-Dindigul Road when she became the target of the thieves. Two men on a motorcycle executed the snatching. The pillion rider suddenly grabbed Vijaya's gold chains, which weighed a total of five sovereigns, and the duo sped away before she could react.

Following her complaint, the Inamkulathur police registered a formal case under Section 392 of the Indian Penal Code (robbery) and launched an investigation to track down the perpetrators.

The Investigation Unfolds: A Routine Check Leads to Arrests

The breakthrough in the case came months later, on November 13, 2019. During a routine vehicle inspection near Yelagiri Plaza, police officers stopped two suspicious individuals riding an unregistered motorcycle. The men, identified as S Sudhakar from Kambarasampettai and P Abimanyu from Valavandankottai, tried to flee but fell and were subsequently apprehended.

A search led to the recovery of a gold chain that had been snatched from another victim, Malini, near Jeeyapuram just a week earlier on November 6, 2019. During interrogation, Sudhakar confessed to being involved in several chain-snatching incidents. He specifically admitted to collaborating with another man, D Dinesh, to rob Vijaya on that July day. He further revealed a crucial detail: the gold chains stolen from Vijaya had already been melted down into gold bars to avoid detection.

Based on this confession, Dinesh was arrested on January 16, 2020, near a cemetery in the Oyamari area of Trichy.

The Legal Proceedings and Final Verdict

It is noteworthy that Sudhakar and Abimanyu were already convicted and sentenced to two years in prison for the Malini chain-snatching case on December 11, 2025. The trial for the separate case involving Vijaya proceeded at the Judicial Magistrate Court 5 in Trichy.

In this trial, Assistant Public Prosecutor S Venkatesan represented the state, while Advocate M Sivagami defended the accused. After considering the evidence and arguments, Judicial Magistrate M Darwin Muthu pronounced the final verdict on December 17, 2025.

The court found both accused guilty under IPC Section 392 and imposed a sentence of one year of rigorous imprisonment. This conviction adds to the legal consequences for the duo, particularly for Sudhakar, whose serial offenses have now been firmly addressed by the judiciary.
