Police in Meghalaya's East Jaintia Hills district have made significant headway in a case involving an explosive device blast last month, arresting two individuals and uncovering alleged links to a banned insurgent outfit.
Blast at Construction Company Campus
The incident occurred in the midnight of December 15, 2025, at the campus of Dhar Construction Company located near Shymplong village. Authorities at the Lumshnong Police Station registered a First Information Report (FIR) on December 16 after receiving news of the explosion. A subsequent forensic analysis of the site confirmed the use of explosive substances and an improvised explosive device (IED).
Fortunately, the blast only caused material damage, destroying one water tanker truck. No injuries or casualties were reported from the incident. Based on the findings, the police have registered a formal case under the stringent Explosive Substances Act.
Arrests and Uncovered Conspiracy
In connection with the blast, the district police apprehended two residents of Shymplong Village. They have been identified as Richard Suchen (31) and Pynshaitbor Syih (45).
Investigations have revealed a deeper conspiracy. According to police statements, the mastermind behind the attack is one Smiki Tongper, also from Shymplong Village. Tongper is accused of planning and executing the blast in coordination with the two arrested men and an unidentified member of the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC).
In a concerning revelation, East Jaintia Hills district SP Vikash Kumar stated that Smiki Tongper is also an accused in a separate case registered at the Khliehriat Woman Police Station under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Weapons Cache Seized
Following the leads, police conducted a search of Smiki Tongper's house and compound. The operation led to the discovery and seizure of a significant cache of materials used for making explosives and weapons. The seized items include:
- A country-made rifle
- Gun powder
- Detonators
- Fuse wires
- Other items used for creating explosions
The search underscores the serious nature of the threat and the planning involved in the incident.
Police Appeal for Public Help
In an official statement issued on December 20, SP Vikash Kumar appealed to the public for assistance. He urged anyone with information about other individuals involved in this illegal act to come forward and inform the local police station immediately.
The police have assured that the identity of informants will be kept secret and have also promised a suitable reward for credible information that aids the investigation. This move highlights the ongoing efforts to track down all perpetrators linked to the blast and the alleged HNLC connection.
The case continues to be investigated, with authorities working to apprehend the main accused, Smiki Tongper, and the unidentified HNLC member.
