Kushinagar Police Nab Two in GST Impersonation and Extortion Case
In a significant crackdown, Kushinagar police on Sunday arrested two individuals for allegedly masquerading as GST officials and attempting to extort a substantial sum of money from a truck driver on a national highway. The incident, which unfolded near a petrol pump at Baghi, has highlighted the risks faced by commercial drivers and the vigilance of law enforcement.
Details of the Arrest and Accused
The accused have been identified as Govind Sharma, a resident of Tamkuhiraj in Kushinagar, and Sandeep Yadav from the Turkpatti area. Police recovered a car, a motorcycle, and mobile phones from their possession, which are believed to have been used in the commission of the crime. Following their arrest, the duo was produced before a court and subsequently sent to jail. Authorities are actively pursuing two other accomplices involved in this brazen attempt at extortion.
How the Extortion Attempt Unfolded
According to police reports, the victim, truck driver Jaswant Singh from Hanumangarh in Rajasthan, had stopped his vehicle near the petrol pump when four men on motorcycles approached him. They introduced themselves as GST officials and demanded to inspect GST documents related to his consignment. Despite Singh presenting valid papers, the accused falsely declared them to be fake and demanded a penalty of Rs 1.8 lakh, pressuring both the driver and his helper to comply.
Sensing something amiss, Singh contacted the vehicle owner, Ramrishi of Sirsa district in Haryana, who confirmed the authenticity of the documents and advised him to alert the police. Demonstrating quick thinking, Singh managed to inform the Patherwa police while also capturing a photograph of one of the motorcycles' number plates. This crucial evidence played a key role in the subsequent police action.
Police Response and Ongoing Investigation
Upon receiving the alert, police launched an immediate search operation, which led to the apprehension of two of the accused near Kajipur cut on the highway. Keshav Kumar, the Superintendent of Police in Kushinagar, stated that a formal case has been registered based on the complaint filed by the truck owner. The police are currently conducting raids to locate and arrest the remaining suspects involved in this incident.
This case underscores the importance of public awareness and prompt reporting of suspicious activities. It also serves as a reminder of the legal consequences for those attempting to exploit official positions for personal gain. The swift action by Kushinagar police has been commended, and further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
