Delhi Police Arrests Two Men in Connection with Assault on Army Brigadier and Son
In a significant development, Delhi Police on Tuesday apprehended two individuals linked to the violent assault on a brigadier and his son in southwest Delhi's Vasant Vihar area. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, stemmed from the family's objection to public drinking, leading to a confrontation that escalated into physical violence.
Details of the Accused and Incident
The arrested men have been identified as Satender, also known as Sonu (49), and Sanjay Sharma (56), both residents of Mehram Nagar. According to a senior police officer, Satender serves as a director at a firm specializing in aviation services, including charter and cargo flights, and is involved in the sale and purchase of aircraft parts. Sanjay, on the other hand, operates a dhaba in Mehram Nagar.
Preliminary investigations reveal that the accused were inside a Mercedes SUV at the time of the altercation. Police have seized the vehicle, which is suspected to belong to Satender, and are probing whether other associates participated in the assault. The officer noted that the accused are not cooperating fully with the investigation.
Sequence of Events and Police Response
The brigadier's wife recounted to authorities that the family was out for a stroll around 9:45 PM on Saturday when they noticed two men consuming liquor inside a car parked near their society gate. Upon objecting and requesting them to stop, the men allegedly responded with abusive language and obscene remarks.
The family immediately dialed the police helpline 112, and a PCR vehicle arrived at the scene by 10:15 PM. However, the situation worsened in the presence of law enforcement. Soon after, two additional cars arrived, and seven to eight men, purportedly acquaintances of the drinkers, emerged. They allegedly threw the brigadier's son to the ground and assaulted him, causing multiple injuries. When the brigadier intervened, he too was surrounded and beaten, resulting in bruises, including on his elbow.
The assault reportedly continued for nearly 20 minutes, with police personnel present but allegedly failing to intervene effectively. Following the incident, Satender and Sanjay changed vehicles and fled but were later arrested after police raids.
