Triple Murder in Jharkhand Village Over Witchcraft Allegations
In a shocking incident, a couple and their minor son were brutally murdered in Danga village of Godda district, Jharkhand, late on Monday night. Victims Identified as Family of Three
The victims have been identified as Darbari Murmu, aged 50, his wife Makku Baski, aged 45, and their 12-year-old son, Jeetnarayan Murmu. The family was attacked in their home, with the assailants using a blood-stained axe, which has since been recovered from the crime scene by investigating officers.
Police Investigation and Arrests
Upon receiving information about the murders, a police team led by Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Ashok Priyadarshi rushed to Danga village to initiate a thorough investigation. Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the case and have been identified as Santlal Murmu, Hemlal Murmu, and Talababu Murmu.
During initial interrogation, the accused confessed to the police that they suspected the victims of engaging in witchcraft practices, which allegedly motivated the heinous crime. All three have been booked under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges of murder, as confirmed by Godda SDPO Ashok Ravidas.
Legal and Community Response
The Godda District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) has taken suo motu cognizance of the murder, demonstrating the legal system's proactive stance on such violent acts. Dipak Kumar, the principal district and sessions judge-cum-secretary of DLSA, dispatched a team to the village to gather detailed information about the incident, ensuring a comprehensive legal follow-up.
Police have also informed Sunita Murmu, the married daughter of the deceased couple who lives elsewhere, about the tragic loss of her family members. This step underscores the authorities' efforts to provide support and transparency to the affected relatives amidst the ongoing investigation.
Broader Implications and Context
This triple murder sheds light on the persistent issue of witchcraft-related violence in certain regions of India, where deep-rooted superstitions can lead to fatal outcomes. The incident in Godda district serves as a stark reminder of the need for continued awareness campaigns and stricter enforcement of laws against such barbaric practices.
The police investigation remains active, with authorities working to ensure justice for the victims and their family. As the case progresses, it highlights the critical role of law enforcement and legal bodies in combating crimes driven by irrational beliefs and protecting vulnerable communities from similar atrocities.
