Tirupati Police Incinerates Massive ₹20 Crore Cannabis Haul in Drug Crackdown
In a decisive move against the drug menace, the Tirupati police conducted a major operation to destroy a massive cache of seized cannabis (ganja) in the district. The action underscores the administration's firm stance on eliminating narcotics from the region.
Destruction of Contraband Worth Crores
Approximately 4,100 kilograms of contraband cannabis, with an estimated street value of ₹20 crore, was incinerated at the solid waste management yard in Erramreddy Palem near Tukivakam in Renigunta mandal of Tirupati district. The destruction took place on Friday as part of a coordinated effort by law enforcement agencies.
Zero-Tolerance Policy and Government Initiatives
Tirupati district collector Dr. Venkateshwar emphasized that the state government is adopting a "zero-tolerance" approach towards drug abuse and trafficking. Acting on directives from the chief minister, the administration has established a special task force supervised by Inspector General (IG)-level officers to intensify anti-drug operations.
Dr. Venkateshwar highlighted that enforcement is being complemented by robust awareness campaigns. A recent initiative connected one lakh students through an online platform to educate them about the dangers of substance abuse, aiming to prevent drug addiction at an early stage.
Police Efforts and Community Involvement
Tirupati Superintendent of Police L. Subbarayudu reported that over the past three years, police have successfully confiscated and destroyed more than 4,000 kilograms of cannabis. "Tirupati is a place of profound spiritual significance. We will not tolerate any drug-related activities here," the SP asserted firmly.
He further explained that drug addiction often serves as a gateway to criminal behavior, directly threatening peace and public order. Subbarayudu stressed that achieving a drug-free society requires active community participation, urging citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
Public Appeal and Ongoing Vigilance
The Tirupati district police have appealed to the public to cooperate in the fight against drugs. Citizens are encouraged to immediately report any information regarding the transport, sale, or consumption of cannabis to the authorities. This collaborative approach aims to strengthen enforcement and ensure long-term success in curbing the drug trade.
The destruction of the cannabis cache marks a significant milestone in Tirupati's ongoing efforts to combat narcotics, reflecting a comprehensive strategy that combines strict law enforcement with preventive education and community engagement.
