In a crackdown on illegal meat trade, police in Maharashtra's Thane district have arrested a 38-year-old shopkeeper for allegedly selling beef in violation of the state law.
Raid Follows Tip-Off in Bhiwandi
Acting on specific intelligence regarding unlawful meat trading activities, a police team conducted a surprise raid on a shop located in the Nizampura area of Bhiwandi. The operation took place on November 29.
During the search, officials confiscated a substantial quantity of meat suspected to be beef. An official from the Nizampura police station confirmed the seizure, stating, "Our team found the shop selling beef without any legal permission. After confirming the nature of the meat, we registered a case and arrested the accused."
Seizure and Legal Action
The police recovered approximately 16 kilograms of beef from the premises. The estimated market value of the seized contraband is Rs 5,500.
The accused, who runs the meat shop, has been booked under the stringent provisions of the Maharashtra Animal Preservation Act. This legislation prohibits the slaughter of cows, calves, bulls, and bullocks, as well as the possession and sale of their meat.
