Thane Police have registered a case against eight individuals, including owners and employees of a shipping company in Navi Mumbai, for allegedly duping 75 job seekers of Rs 1.73 crore. The accused promised lucrative employment but failed to deliver, officials said on Thursday.
How the Fraud Operated
According to a Kharghar police station official, the accused operated from their office in the area, targeting job seekers with assurances of high-paying roles. Over the past two months, they collected Rs 1,73,81,400 from unsuspecting applicants but did not provide the promised jobs.
When victims sought updates or refunds, the accused abruptly stopped all communication, leaving them stranded.
Victims File Complaint
A formal complaint was lodged on Monday by one of the victims, who provided details of all 75 affected individuals and the amounts paid by each. Based on this, police filed an FIR under sections 318 (cheating) and 3(5) (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
No arrests have been made so far, and a probe is underway, the official added.
