Tension at NEET-UG Centre Over Hijab, Sacred Thread

Brief tension erupted outside a NEET-UG re-test centre in Ahmedabad on Friday after some parents objected to Hindu students being asked to remove their sacred threads, while female students wearing hijab were permitted to enter the examination centre.

Parents Raise Objections

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police Jayesh Brahmbhatt, the incident occurred when a group of parents raised concerns over the differential treatment. They argued that if hijab-wearing students were allowed entry without any restriction, Hindu students should not be required to remove their sacred threads, which hold religious significance.

The situation, however, did not escalate further as police personnel present at the venue intervened and calmed the parents. The examination proceeded without any major disruption, officials said.

Police Confirm Incident

ACP Brahmbhatt confirmed the brief tension and stated that the police managed to resolve the issue amicably. “Some parents objected to Hindu students being asked to remove their sacred threads after female students wearing hijab were permitted to enter the examination centre. We explained the situation and ensured that the exam continued smoothly,” he said.

The NEET-UG re-test was being conducted at a centre in the Sola area of Ahmedabad. The incident highlights the ongoing sensitivity around religious symbols in educational settings.

Background of the Issue

The controversy over hijab and religious symbols in educational institutions has been a contentious issue in India, with several cases reaching courts. In this instance, the examination authorities had reportedly instructed students to remove items that could potentially be used for unfair means, leading to the objection.

No formal complaint was filed by either side, and the exam concluded without further incident. The police maintained a presence to ensure law and order.
