A 17-year-old student lost his life in a tragic incident of group violence in East Delhi, leading to the apprehension of six minors by the police. The Class XI student succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Tuesday after a violent altercation escalated into a fatal assault.
Chronology of a Tragic Assault
The incident first came to the notice of authorities on Monday evening. Around 7:25 pm, the Mayur Vihar police station received a medico-legal case (MLC) call from a local hospital. The call reported an unconscious boy who had a history of physical assault. Police officers immediately initiated an enquiry into the matter.
During the investigation, an eyewitness provided a harrowing account of the events. According to the statement given to DCP (East) Abhishek Dhania, the victim had a pre-existing dispute with one of the juveniles from the area. On the fateful evening, the victim was with his friends near the site when a verbal argument broke out with the group of juveniles. This argument quickly turned physical.
Eyewitness Account and Failed Intervention
The eyewitness described a brutal scene where the teenager was surrounded by multiple assailants. The juveniles repeatedly punched and kicked the victim, continuing the assault even after he had fallen to the ground. When the eyewitness attempted to intervene and stop the violence, he too was allegedly assaulted by the group.
The attack left the 17-year-old unconscious. He was rushed to the hospital for treatment, where doctors declared him unfit to give a statement. Despite medical efforts, the teenager succumbed to his injuries around 1:15 am on Tuesday.
Police Investigation and Legal Action
Following the death, the Mayur Vihar police registered a First Information Report (FIR). The case was filed under sections 103(1), 115(2), 126(2), and 3(5) of the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). A thorough investigation was launched immediately.
The police crime team and officials from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) conducted a detailed inspection of the crime scene to gather evidence. Based on the preliminary investigation, police have apprehended all six individuals involved in the incident. All of them are juveniles.
The post-mortem examination of the victim has been completed. However, the final opinion from authorities regarding the exact cause of death is still awaited. Police have confirmed that further investigation into the case is actively in progress.
