Nashik TCS Harassment Case: Accused Alleges Custodial Assault During Court Hearing
In a significant development in the Nashik TCS workplace harassment case, one of the accused has made a serious allegation of assault while in police custody. During a court hearing on Thursday, the accused informed the judge that he was physically beaten while lodged at Nashik Road Central Jail. This claim adds a new layer of complexity to an already high-profile investigation.
Court Proceedings and Custodial Remand
The accused, along with a co-accused, was produced before the court under heavy security measures. The court subsequently remanded both individuals to police custody until April 18, 2024. This decision was made to facilitate further investigation into multiple cases linked to alleged harassment and coercion at a Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) facility located in Nashik.
It is important to note that no formal complaint has been filed with the police regarding the alleged custodial assault at this time. Investigators emphasized to the court that custodial interrogation remains necessary at this stage. They cited the potential for more victims to come forward and the critical need to recover electronic evidence, which could be pivotal in the case.
Expanding Scope of the Investigation
The case has widened considerably since its inception. To date, nine First Information Reports (FIRs) have been registered across two police stations: one at Deolali Camp police station and eight at Mumbai Naka police station. The investigation was initially triggered by a complaint from a woman employee who alleged she was lured into a relationship under the false promise of marriage.
As the probe progressed, several other women courageously came forward with similar allegations. The complaints encompass a range of serious charges, including:
- Sexual harassment and inappropriate touching
- Stalking and making objectionable remarks
- Mental harassment within the workplace environment
- Pressure to adopt specific religious practices or convert
So far, a total of six accused individuals have been arrested in connection with these allegations. Additionally, the unit's operations manager has been sent to 14-day judicial custody.
Ongoing Investigative Efforts
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) assigned to the case is actively pursuing multiple lines of inquiry. Investigators have examined over 40 clips of CCTV footage and are meticulously recording statements from both victims and the accused. In a notable tactical move, an undercover operation involving women police personnel was conducted to apprehend one of the suspects, demonstrating the investigative team's commitment to resolving the case.
Officials have also provided clarification regarding the operational status of the TCS unit in Nashik. Contrary to some rumors, the unit has not been shut down. However, employees are currently working from home as a precautionary measure due to the ongoing police investigation and to ensure a non-disruptive environment for the probe.
The case continues to unfold, with authorities urging anyone with relevant information to come forward to assist in the pursuit of justice.
