A Surat resident, Jignesh Talaviya (36), allegedly staged his own kidnapping and sent a ransom demand of Rs 50 lakh to his wife, claiming he had been abducted. The Utran police traced him to Shiv Hotel in Godhra, Panchmahal district, after investigating the message.
Police Investigation Reveals Debt Motive
According to police, Talaviya had incurred significant losses in share market trading. He went missing on June 12, prompting his wife Nisha to file a missing person complaint with Utran police. Talaviya then allegedly posed as a kidnapper and sent a message to his wife, demanding Rs 50 lakh from his family, relatives, and friends to clear his debts.
Based on the message, police tracked him to a hotel in Godhra on June 15. Talaviya worked as an accountant at a Surat-based diamond firm. Police have booked him for misleading law enforcement and creating false evidence.
Reenactment of the Staged Abduction
During the investigation, authorities asked Talaviya to recreate the sequence of events and demonstrate how he recorded a video showing himself tied up and helpless. The case highlights the lengths individuals may go to when facing financial pressure.
