Surat Gym Trainer Arrested in Extortion Case Following Police Warning
In a significant development in Surat, the Special Operations Group (SOG) has apprehended a 50-year-old gym trainer for allegedly entrapping a married woman in a relationship and subsequently attempting to extort a substantial sum of money from her husband. This arrest comes precisely one month after Surat police issued a stern warning to gym owners regarding escalating harassment cases within fitness facilities.
Details of the Arrest and Allegations
The accused, identified as Shabbir Trunkwala, is facing serious charges including extortion, criminal intimidation, and issuing death threats. According to police reports, Trunkwala allegedly demanded Rs 5 lakh from the woman's husband, threatening to make her private photographs viral if his demands were not met. Additionally, he is accused of extorting Rs 50,000 from the complainant in a separate incident and issuing direct threats to his life.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajdeep Nakum provided context to the case, stating that police had previously received multiple complaints about gym trainers luring women into inappropriate relationships. "We had called gym owners and trainers for a meeting on March 9 and warned them against such activities. Despite that, this case came to light after a businessman approached us," Nakum explained, highlighting the persistence of such misconduct despite official warnings.
Chronology of Events and Investigation
The investigation reveals that the woman initially joined a gym in Surat's City Light area approximately seven years ago, where she first encountered Trunkwala as her trainer. Over time, he allegedly manipulated her into a relationship, despite being married with two children of his own. The situation escalated seven months ago when Trunkwala visited the woman's residence in the Pal area, leading to a confrontation with her husband who demanded he stay away.
Instead of complying, Trunkwala allegedly intensified his threats, specifically warning that he would circulate private pictures of the woman unless he received Rs 5 lakh. In another disturbing incident that occurred two months ago near a school in Adajan, the accused reportedly threatened the complainant by placing a piece of broken glass against his throat while demanding money. Fearing for his safety, the businessman paid Rs 50,000 immediately and promised to pay the remaining amount later.
Following advice from family members, the complainant finally approached the SOG and filed a formal complaint, prompting the arrest. Police authorities have now launched a comprehensive investigation to determine whether Trunkwala targeted other women using similar tactics, suggesting this might not be an isolated case.
Broader Implications and Police Response
This case underscores ongoing concerns about harassment in gym environments, particularly following the police's proactive meeting with gym owners in March. The arrest serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities that can exist in such settings and the importance of vigilance among both authorities and the public.
Pal police have officially booked Trunkwala under relevant sections for extortion and criminal intimidation, with the investigation continuing to uncover further details. The SOG's intervention highlights the seriousness with which law enforcement is treating these types of crimes, especially when they involve threats to personal safety and privacy.
