A joyous family outing during the Uttarayan festival ended in unimaginable tragedy in Surat. Three members of a family lost their lives after their motorcycle plunged from a flyover in the Rander area.
Details of the Fatal Accident
The incident occurred on the Chandrashekhar Azad flyover, commonly known as Jilani bridge. Police reports indicate that Rehan Shaikh, aged 34, was riding the motorcycle with his wife Rehana Bibi, 33, and their 10-year-old daughter Alisha Khatun. The family had planned to visit Subhash Garden in Mora Bhagan on Wednesday evening.
While negotiating a turn towards Rander on the flyover, Shaikh reportedly lost control of the vehicle. The motorcycle struck the railing, causing all three occupants to be thrown from a height of approximately 60 feet onto vacant land below.
Immediate Aftermath and Fatalities
Rehan Shaikh and his young daughter Alisha died on the spot. They were rushed to Zainab Hospital but could not be saved. In a heartbreaking turn of events, Rehana Bibi initially survived the fall. She landed on an auto rickshaw parked below, which may have cushioned her impact.
Doctors transferred Rehana to Mahavir Hospital for advanced treatment. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries on Thursday afternoon. The entire family perished within a span of two days.
Police Investigation and Findings
Rander police have registered a First Information Report in this case. Authorities have booked the deceased rider, Rehan Shaikh, for rash and negligent driving causing deaths. Initial speculation suggested that a kite string might have obstructed the rider during the Uttarayan celebrations.
However, police clarified that their preliminary investigation found no traces of string or cuts that would support this theory. Investigators have launched a detailed probe to determine the exact cause of the accident.
Background of the Deceased Family
Rehan Shaikh originally hailed from Hooghly district in West Bengal. He worked at a jewellery shop in Surat where he crafted gold jewellery. The family had made Surat their home, and their tragic deaths have left the community in shock.
This incident serves as a grim reminder of road safety during festival seasons. As investigations continue, authorities urge citizens to exercise extreme caution while traveling, especially on elevated roads and bridges.
