Authorities at a crucial border crossing in Uttar Pradesh have apprehended a foreign national for entering the country without following legal procedures. The incident underscores ongoing vigilance at India's porous frontiers.
Border Vigilance Leads to Apprehension
Late on Saturday, December 21, a significant breach of immigration protocol was uncovered at the Sonauli check post in Maharajganj district. This checkpoint serves as a major gateway on the Indo-Nepal border. During a routine verification process, immigration officers Rohit Singh and Vishal Yadav encountered a man arriving with his family around 9:45 PM for clearance.
Initially, the individual claimed to be an Indian citizen. However, when pressed for identification, he presented a passport issued by Sri Lanka. This immediate contradiction triggered a deeper inspection by the officials from the Bureau of Immigration.
Unraveling the Truth Behind the Journey
The man was identified as Kenady Rajendram, aged 52. A careful examination of his Sri Lankan passport revealed a critical omission: it lacked the mandatory Indian immigration arrival stamp. This discovery confirmed suspicions of an illegal entry.
Following sustained questioning by officials, Rajendram allegedly confessed to the scheme. He stated that several criminal cases were pending against him in Sri Lanka. To escape potential legal action there, he reportedly paid an unidentified agent to facilitate his unauthorized entry into India on October 5, 2025.
Nautanwa circle officer Jai Prakash Tiwati revealed that Rajendram had bypassed all official immigration checks. After entering the country, he had been residing in the Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu with his family until his attempt to cross the Sonauli border.
Legal Proceedings and Evidence Seized
The immigration officials promptly handed over Kenady Rajendram to the Sonauli police for formal legal action. A criminal case has been initiated against him under relevant sections of the law pertaining to illegal entry and violations of immigration statutes.
As part of the evidence collection, authorities have seized crucial documents from the suspect:
- His current Sri Lankan passport.
- His previous Sri Lankan passport.
- His Sri Lankan citizenship document.
Police officials confirmed that the process of registering a First Information Report (FIR) in the matter has been ordered. The case highlights the coordinated efforts of multiple agencies—the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), local police, and immigration authorities—in maintaining border security and enforcing immigration laws.
