Sonipat Gang-Rape Case: 19-Year-Old Woman Attacked After Accepting Car Ride
Police in Haryana's Sonipat district reported a horrific incident involving a 19-year-old woman. Three men allegedly gang-raped her after offering her a lift home. The crime occurred on January 16, according to official statements.
How the Attack Unfolded
The young woman was waiting for an auto-rickshaw at ITI Chowk in Sonipat. A youth from her village, traveling in a car with two companions, stopped and offered her a ride. She accepted their offer, thinking they would take her home safely.
Instead, the men drove to a liquor outlet. They purchased alcohol and consumed it inside the vehicle. Then they took the car to a secluded location. There, they allegedly forced the woman to drink alcohol before raping her.
Police Action and Legal Proceedings
Bahalgarh station house officer Mahesh Kumar confirmed the victim filed a complaint the same day. Authorities registered an FIR under Sections 70(1) for gang rape and 3(5) for acts done by several persons with common intention of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Police have arrested one accused. They continue efforts to trace the remaining two suspects, who are between 20 and 25 years old and currently absconding.
Recent Similar Incident in Haryana
This case follows another disturbing attack in Haryana just weeks earlier. In early January, a 25-year-old woman accepted a late-night lift on the Gurgaon–Faridabad Road. Two men allegedly raped her inside a van.
The woman endured nearly three hours of captivity. Her assailants assaulted her inside the moving vehicle before throwing her out while it was still in motion. She sustained serious facial injuries requiring multiple stitches.
In that case, the woman's family claimed the vehicle posed as an ambulance. Police confirmed this allegation remains under investigation. Authorities detained the accused and registered an FIR under gang rape and other sections of the BNS.
These back-to-back incidents highlight ongoing safety concerns for women in Haryana. They raise urgent questions about preventive measures and law enforcement responses to such crimes.
