Police in Coimbatore have arrested six individuals, all migrant workers from Bihar, in connection with the brutal murder of their 23-year-old co-worker. The incident, which occurred in Malumichampatti, culminated in the victim succumbing to stab wounds early Monday morning.
Drunken Altercation Turns Deadly
The tragic sequence of events unfolded on Sunday night at a rented accommodation shared by the workers. According to the Chettipalayam police, the victim, Rakesh Kumar (23), and his brother, Raja Kumar, were having their dinner. Meanwhile, the accused persons were consuming alcohol nearby.
A sudden quarrel erupted between the two groups. In a fit of rage, one of the accused, Rajakumar Mandal, allegedly assaulted Rakesh. When Raja Kumar tried to intervene and break up the fight, the other five accused turned on him and assaulted him as well.
Fatal Stabbing and Police Action
The situation escalated violently when Rajakumar Mandal grabbed a knife from the kitchen. He then stabbed Rakesh Kumar in the neck. The critically injured man was rushed to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for emergency treatment.
Despite medical efforts, Rakesh Kumar could not be saved. He succumbed to his injuries around 4 am on Monday. Following his death, the Chettipalayam police swiftly registered a murder case and launched an investigation.
Arrests and Legal Proceedings
The police identified and arrested all six individuals involved. The adults taken into custody are Rajakumar Mandal, Nakul Mandal, Bikash Kumar, Avdesh Kumar Mandal, and Ravikumar. The sixth accused is a minor boy.
All six are originally from Bihar and were employed at a private firm near Malumichampatti. After the arrests, the five adult accused were presented before a court and remanded to judicial custody. The minor, being a child in conflict with law, was sent to an observation home as per legal protocol.
The case highlights a grim instance of violence among migrant worker communities living in close quarters. The Coimbatore police have confirmed that the investigation into the murder is ongoing.
