Silchar Gangrape Case: Police Withhold Medical Report as Investigation Continues
In a significant development in the Silchar gangrape case, police authorities have officially received the medical examination report of the woman who alleged she was sexually assaulted on the Silchar bypass road on the night of February 19. However, citing stringent legal and investigative protocols, officials have declined to disclose the contents of the report to the public or media.

Cachar additional superintendent of police (crime), Rajat Kumar Pal, addressed reporters on Wednesday, emphasizing that the probe is advancing on multiple fronts. "The investigation is at a crucial stage and fact-finding processes are yet to be completed," Pal stated, adding that concerted efforts are underway to apprehend all individuals involved in the incident.
Despite the official stance, police sources have revealed that the medical examination, conducted at Silchar Medical College and Hospital, did not uncover corroborative evidence to confirm the rape allegation. According to these sources, no external injuries were observed during the examination at the time. Officials reiterated that the investigation remains active and ongoing, with no conclusions drawn prematurely.
Details of the Alleged Incident and Legal Action
Based on the woman's statement, the alleged incident occurred when she and her fiancé had stopped near Chengcoorie Road along the bypass. A group of youths reportedly arrived in another vehicle, restrained her fiancé, and sexually assaulted her. In response, a case has been registered at Silchar Sadar Police Station under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The charges include provisions related to dacoity, criminal conspiracy, criminal intimidation, and gangrape. So far, one suspect has been arrested in connection with the case.

Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev has intervened by writing to the Cachar superintendent of police, urging stringent action and enhanced security measures. In her letter, Dev called for the implementation of night patrolling and the installation of CCTV cameras along the bypass to prevent such incidents in the future.
Over the past couple of days, a number of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have also met with the superintendent of police, pressing for the truth to be revealed in the case. These groups have appealed for rigorous action against the miscreants allegedly involved in the gangrape, highlighting community concerns over safety and justice.
