Arrest Made in Kalyan Hospital Assault Case
Shiv Sena corporator Mahesh Chavan was arrested on Monday evening for assaulting doctors at a civic-run hospital in Kalyan, Maharashtra. The incident, which occurred at the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) hospital, sparked widespread outrage after a video of the assault went viral on social media. Chavan, who represents the Shiv Sena, is now facing disciplinary action from the party as well as legal proceedings.
Details of the Incident
The altercation began when Chavan allegedly demanded preferential treatment for a patient at the hospital. When doctors refused to comply, he reportedly became aggressive and physically assaulted them. The video shows Chavan pushing and slapping medical staff, leading to injuries. The doctors involved later filed a complaint with the local police, resulting in Chavan's arrest under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for assault and criminal intimidation.
Outrage and Response
The incident drew sharp criticism from medical associations and political leaders. The Maharashtra State Medical Association condemned the attack, calling for strict action. Shiv Sena spokesperson Sanjay Raut stated, "The party has taken serious note of the incident and will initiate disciplinary proceedings against the corporator. We do not condone violence against doctors." Chavan's arrest was confirmed by Kalyan police commissioner Vivek Phansalkar, who said, "We have arrested the accused and are investigating the matter further."
Impact on Healthcare Workers
Doctors across Maharashtra staged protests demanding better security at hospitals. Dr. Avinash Supe, a senior doctor, said, "Such incidents create fear and demoralize healthcare workers. We urge the government to implement stricter laws to protect medical professionals." The KDMC hospital has since increased security measures, including deploying guards and installing additional CCTV cameras.
Legal and Political Fallout
Chavan was produced before a local court and remanded to judicial custody. He faces charges under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult to provoke breach of peace), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC. The Shiv Sena has formed a three-member committee to investigate the matter and recommend disciplinary action, which could include suspension or expulsion from the party. The opposition has demanded a thorough inquiry and stricter punishment for public representatives involved in such acts.
