Second Tragic Fall from Wazirpur Flyover in Three Days
Delhi's Wazirpur flyover has become the site of a disturbing pattern, with a second serious accident occurring within just three days. Following the death of a 27-year-old man on Sunday, a 24-year-old man was critically injured on Tuesday after falling from the same elevated road in northwest Delhi.
Details of the Latest Incident
The recent accident took place around 8 pm on Tuesday. The victim, identified as 24-year-old Ritik from Rajouri Garden, was riding his motorcycle from the Pitampura side towards Punjabi Bagh. According to police, his bike allegedly skidded at high speed while taking a turn. The motorcycle then slipped through a gap between the carriageways, causing Ritik to plummet from the flyover.
Police from the Keshavpuram station responded to a PCR call and found Ritik injured at the scene. He was immediately rushed to Deep Chand Bandhu Hospital for treatment. A senior officer highlighted the inherent risk, stating, "At high speed, two-wheelers are particularly vulnerable while turning. The lack of proper barriers adds to the danger."
Police Inspection Reveals Critical Safety Lapses
A spot inspection conducted after Sunday's fatal accident uncovered alarming safety deficiencies. Authorities found an absence of adequate protective barriers between the two carriageways of the flyover. The gap between them was approximately one foot wide, flanked by a short wall and an iron railing, both measuring less than three feet in height.
As the flyover rises, the height difference to the road below ranges from 12 to 15 feet, making any fall from that height potentially fatal. Police have now registered a case of negligence and suspect a possible engineering or design defect at the site. They plan to write to the concerned agency to conduct a thorough examination.
The First Fatal Accident
The initial tragedy occurred on Sunday, when 27-year-old Sourabh died after falling through the same gap on the flyover. He was returning from a New Year party in Rohini with his 30-year-old friend Priyanka. While Priyanka was found injured on the flyover near their damaged scooter, Sourabh was discovered beneath the structure and was declared dead upon reaching the hospital.
In response to the consecutive incidents, police have recommended immediate corrective measures. Their suggestions include installing speed breakers and robust barriers to prevent vehicles from breaching the edge of the flyover. The investigations into both cases are ongoing as calls for urgent infrastructural review grow louder.
