School Van Driver Arrested for Assaulting 6-Year-Old in Coimbatore

COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore city police on Tuesday evening arrested a 43-year-old school van driver on charges of sexually assaulting a six-year-old girl. The girl, who lives with her grandparents, studies in a private school in the city. Her mother works in Bengaluru after the death of her husband. The woman recently visited Coimbatore and took her daughter to Bengaluru since the girl has summer holidays.

After reaching Bengaluru, the mother noticed that the child appeared unusually tired. When asked, the girl complained of pain. A medical examination revealed injuries, prompting the mother to question her further. The girl disclosed that she had often been the first student to board the school van after classes. The driver, identified as Ganesan, lured her with chocolates and sexually abused her. He allegedly threatened to kill her if she told anyone about the abuse.

The woman took her daughter for treatment at a hospital in Bengaluru and later filed a complaint at the Coimbatore East all-women police station. Based on the complaint, police registered a case and arrested Ganesan under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO). He was remanded in judicial custody.
