Supreme Court Collegium Proposes Justice Sujoy Paul as Calcutta High Court Chief Justice

The Supreme Court collegium made a significant recommendation on Monday. It proposed the appointment of Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul as the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court in Kolkata.

Justice Paul's Current Role and Background

Justice Sujoy Paul currently serves as the Acting Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court. His parent high court is the Madhya Pradesh High Court. The collegium transferred him from Madhya Pradesh to Calcutta in July last year.

Born on June 21, 1964, Justice Paul completed his school education at Pandit LS Jha Model Higher Secondary School. He graduated and earned his LLB from Rani Durgavati University in Jabalpur.

Legal Career and Judicial Appointments

Justice Paul enrolled as an advocate in 1990 with the Bar Council of Madhya Pradesh. He handled various legal matters during his practice. His work included civil, constitutional, industrial, and service cases among other branches of law.

The judiciary elevated him as a Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court at Jabalpur on May 27, 2011. He became a permanent Judge on April 14, 2014. More recently, authorities transferred him to the Telangana High Court on March 26, 2024.

Collegium Recommendations and Court Strength

The Supreme Court collegium recommended twenty-one transfers in May 2025. Among these proposals, the collegium suggested Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Lanusungkum Jamir from Gauhati High Court as new Judges for the Calcutta High Court.

The Calcutta High Court currently operates with forty-four sitting Judges. This number falls below the sanctioned strength of seventy-two Judges. The appointment aims to address this gap and strengthen the court's functioning.

Justice Paul's extensive experience across multiple high courts positions him well for this leadership role. His background in diverse legal matters adds depth to the Calcutta High Court's bench.
