In a significant administrative move, senior IPS officer and current chief of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Sadanand Date, has been repatriated to his home cadre of Maharashtra. He is widely expected to take over the reins as the state's Director General of Police (DGP) once the incumbent, Rashmi Shukla, retires on December 31.

Sadanand Date, a 1990-batch Indian Police Service officer, brings a wealth of experience and a sterling reputation to the role. He was appointed as the chief of the premier anti-terror agency, the NIA, in March of last year. His career in Maharashtra is marked by several key postings, including heading the state's Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and serving as the Joint Commissioner of Police for both Crime and Law & Order in Mumbai.
However, Date is perhaps best known for his extraordinary bravery during the devastating 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks in 2008. He played a pivotal role in fiercely defending the Cama Hospital and the city against the terrorists, engaging in a direct confrontation with attacker Ajmal Kasab. During this heroic act, Date sustained injuries but continued to lead the response, an act that has cemented his legacy as a fearless officer.

Widely regarded as one of the most honest and highly professional officers in the IPS, Date's career is defined by initiatives aimed at modernizing policing. His dedication has been recognized with several prestigious awards over his three-decade-long career. These include the Mahatma Gandhi Peace and Communal Harmony award from the Minorities Commission and the Police Medal for Meritorious Services, both received in 2007. For his specific gallantry during the 26/11 attacks, he was honored with the President's Police Medal for Gallantry in 2009.

While Date is the frontrunner for the top police post in Maharashtra, his transition is not without potential hurdles. Officials have pointed out that the central government's decision to relieve him from the NIA was not a foregone conclusion. This is primarily because Date was directly overseeing the crucial case of Tahawwur Rana, the alleged mastermind behind the 2008 Mumbai blasts, who was extradited to India earlier this year. His handling of this sensitive, high-profile case made his immediate repatriation a subject of deliberation.
