RPF Intercepts Major Ganja Haul at Trichy Railway Station During Election Duty
In a significant anti-narcotics operation, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) at Trichy Junction railway station successfully seized a substantial quantity of ganja on Sunday. The contraband, weighing 8.5 kilograms, was discovered abandoned near a platform and is estimated to have a street value of approximately ₹4.2 lakh.
Election Monitoring Leads to Discovery
The seizure occurred while a dedicated RPF special team was actively monitoring the enforcement of the election model code of conduct at Trichy Junction. Their vigilance was focused on platform number 5, a key area within the bustling station.
At around 2:25 AM, shortly after the departure of the Purulia-Tirunelveli superfast train (train number 22605) from the junction, the RPF personnel noticed a suspicious dark blue shoulder bag left unattended. The bag was located near an escalator adjacent to the platform, raising immediate concerns.
Examination Reveals Illicit Substance
Upon closer inspection, the RPF team opened the abandoned bag and uncovered four meticulously wrapped bundles. These packages contained dry ganja, with the total weight confirmed to be 8.5 kilograms. The discovery highlights the ongoing challenges of drug trafficking in public transport hubs.
The swift action by the RPF prevented the potential distribution of these narcotics, underscoring their critical role in maintaining security and law enforcement within railway premises.
Legal Proceedings Initiated
Following the seizure, the RPF promptly handed over the confiscated ganja to the Narcotics Investigation Bureau (NIB) for further investigation and legal action. This transfer ensures that the case will be pursued through appropriate judicial channels to identify and prosecute those responsible for the abandoned contraband.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the persistent efforts required to combat drug-related activities, especially in high-traffic areas like railway stations during sensitive periods such as elections.
The RPF's proactive measures during election monitoring not only uphold electoral integrity but also contribute significantly to broader public safety initiatives against illicit drug trade.
