The Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel in Samastipur have been issued strict directives to curb acts of vandalism targeting passenger trains within the Samastipur division of the East Central Railway (ECR). This move comes in response to repeated incidents causing damage to railway property and inconvenience to commuters.
Specific Train Under Attack
Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Samastipur, Jyoti Prakash Mishra, highlighted that the railways has taken serious note of the recurring vandalism aimed at the Jayanagar–Samastipur passenger train (number 55514). Mischief-makers have been tearing and damaging seats inside several coaches of this train. Mishra stated that over the past month, this particular service has become a soft target for vested interests who carry out these destructive acts during regular operations.
Consequences and Safety Concerns
The damage inflicted on coach interiors is not merely a nuisance; it violates railway safety rules and leads to significant financial loss for the railways. DRM Mishra emphasized that such vandalism also impacts the train's punctuality, as coaches frequently need unscheduled attention and repairs, disrupting the service schedule. The acts raise genuine concerns over passenger safety and maintenance standards.
Public Advisory and Winter Safety Measures
In response, the railway administration has issued a public advisory. Passengers and the general public are urged to immediately report any incidents of vandalism to the RPF by calling helpline numbers 182 or 139. This will enable swift action against the culprits responsible for damaging the coaches. The railways has appealed for vigilance and cooperation from commuters to ensure safety, cleanliness, and smooth operations on the Jayanagar-Samastipur route.
Separately, the division has also stepped up its winter safety protocols. To combat foggy conditions, measures include the installation of Fog Safe Devices (FSD) on locomotives, strengthening the signalling system, and placing Visibility Test Objects (VTOs) at crucial locations. These steps are designed to effectively manage operations during poor visibility in the division.
