Road Accident Dispute Turns Deadly, Ignites Communal Clashes in Dhandhuka

Tension gripped Dhandhuka town in Gujarat after a minor road accident spiraled into a violent confrontation, resulting in the murder of a 30-year-old youth and triggering widespread communal unrest. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, led to arson, vandalism, and rioting, forcing a heavy police deployment to restore order.

Fatal Stabbing Follows Bike Collision

According to police officials, the violence stemmed from a collision between two motorcycles involving individuals from different communities. Ahmedabad Rural Superintendent of Police Om Prakash Jat detailed the sequence of events: "Two youths — one from the Bharwad community and another from a minority community — got involved in an accident when their bikes collided. A confrontation broke out between the two in which some provocative remarks were made, triggering tension."

The situation escalated when members of one group visited the home of the other individual involved in the accident. During the ensuing altercation, Dharmesh Gamara, a 30-year-old from the Bharwad community, was stabbed in the leg with a knife. He later succumbed to excessive bleeding, which police confirmed as the cause of death.

Violence Erupts with Arson and Vandalism

Following Gamara's death, tensions flared rapidly, leading to widespread violence. A group of people set ablaze approximately 10 roadside shops, and several properties were damaged in the rioting. Videos circulating on social media depicted small shops engulfed in flames, with thick black smoke billowing over the area, highlighting the severity of the arson attacks.

To prevent the communally charged situation from spiraling out of control, a large convoy of policemen, led by senior officials including Ahmedabad Range IG Raghavendra Vats and SP Om Prakash Jat, descended on the town. Their swift intervention helped bring the situation under control, with fire brigade teams also rushing to the scene to extinguish the fires.

Police Response and Investigation Underway

In the aftermath, police detained two youths from the minority community, identified as Rizwan and Saleem, for their alleged involvement in the murder. Additionally, around 10-15 men from both communities were detained for rioting and arson. Investigators are examining CCTV footage to identify more offenders involved in the violence.

House-to-house combing and increased patrolling were undertaken in the area to apprehend those responsible for the arson and vandalism. Late on Saturday night, Gamara's mortal remains were cremated amid tight police vigil and the presence of a large number of locals, with an uneasy calm prevailing over the town.

Historical Context of Communal Unrest

This incident echoes previous communal tensions in Dhandhuka. In 2022, the town witnessed major unrest after Kishan Bharwad, a 30-year-old youth, was killed by members of another community over an 'objectionable post' that hurt religious sentiments. The recurrence of such violence underscores ongoing communal sensitivities in the region.

Police officials emphasized that the current investigation is focused on preventing further escalation and ensuring justice. The use of CCTV footage and detentions aims to hold perpetrators accountable and restore peace in the community.
