A 35-year-old local trader was discovered dead in a water-filled ditch at Govindpur village under Baisi police station area of Purnia district on Monday. The victim, identified as Anwar Alam, had allegedly been stabbed multiple times before his throat was slit, according to police.
Investigation Launched
Police have initiated an investigation and sent the body to GMCH for post-mortem. A forensic team was also called to collect evidence from the crime scene. The deceased’s family has accused his brother-in-law, Sharafat alias Fakira, of the murder. A raid was conducted at the accused’s residence on Monday, but Sharafat, along with his family members, is absconding.
Background of the Dispute
SHO Shiv Kumar Paswan stated that Sharafat and Anwar were former business partners as well as brothers-in-law. “Sharafat’s puffed rice mill, located in Uttar Dinajpur, was not operational. At Anwar’s suggestion, he returned and opened a mill in Chiraiya panchayat and used to pay Anwar Rs 10,000–15,000 per month. Over time, a dispute arose between them, with both seeking full control of the mill,” he said.
A panchayat was held six years ago to resolve the dispute, following which Anwar paid Rs 2.8 lakh and took over the mill. However, within a few months, Sharafat claimed the deal was unfair and locked the mill. “Nearly two years later, the mill was allegedly set on fire by Sharafat, after which another compromise was reached. Despite repeated settlements, tensions between the two persisted,” the SHO added.
Recent Threat and Murder
Paswan further said, “About 10–15 days ago, both attended a wedding in Simalia village in Uttar Dinajpur, where a heated argument took place. Sharafat allegedly threatened Anwar, saying he would ‘settle the matter within 15 days’. The murder occurred soon after.” Police are conducting raids to arrest the accused.
