The Punjab Police has launched a massive crackdown on organized crime. DGP Gaurav Yadav announced Operation Prahar on Tuesday in Chandigarh. This intensive 72-hour operation involves 12,000 police personnel across the state.
Unprecedented Scale and Immediate Action
Operation Prahar represents an all-out war against gangsters in Punjab. DGP Yadav stated clearly that the police will leave no place for gangsters in the state. The goal is to make Punjab completely gangster-free by dismantling their entire ecosystem.
As part of the launch, 2,000 police teams are actively operating across Punjab. They are targeting 60 main gangsters currently based abroad. The focus also includes 1,200 associates and 600 family members involved in criminal activities.
Authorities have committed to thorough interrogations of arrested criminals. They plan to arrest all identified individuals. This operation is described as unprecedented in scale across India.
Targeting the Gangster Ecosystem
Operation Prahar aims to completely bust the ecosystem supporting gangsters. This includes safe houses used for hiding and planning. Police will also target weapon supply chains and financing networks.
Money laundering of proceeds from crime will face strict action. The police said there will be zero tolerance for aiders or abetters. This includes anyone with even minor involvement in gangster activities.
International Focus and Coordination
Gangsters operating from foreign shores will face the full force of the law. The police have established an overseas coordination cell to coordinate international efforts.
Key measures include issuing Interpol notices and extradition requests. Of the 60 key gangsters abroad, 23 Red Corner Notices have already been issued. The remaining 37 will follow shortly.
Authorities are working on identifying and deporting gangsters in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. This international pressure forms a crucial part of the strategy.
Appeal to Youth and Crackdown on Facilitators
DGP Yadav has appealed to youth involved in gangster activities. He urged them to return to the mainstream immediately as the crackdown begins.
Special focus includes cracking down on criminal financing. Proceeds of crime and funding sources will be seized under relevant laws. Travel agents aiding gangsters' escape face major crackdowns.
Several such agents have been identified already. Authorities are taking action against them for facilitating illegal exits and operations.
Incentives and Rewards for Police Personnel
To motivate officers, a reward policy of Rs 10 crore has been announced. This is for successful actions against drugs and gangsters. SSPs can recommend cash awards up to Rs 1 lakh.
Commissioners of Police and DIG ranges can announce rewards up to Rs 1.50 lakh. Awards above Rs 2 lakh require DGP approval. Rewards extend to seizures of drugs and successful convictions.
Out-of-turn promotions and additional cash incentives are available for police officials involved in crackdowns. This comprehensive reward system aims to boost police morale and effectiveness.
Anti-Gangster Helpline Launched
A dedicated anti-gangster helpline has been launched. The number 9394693946 operates 24x7. Citizens can provide information on gangsters, associates, or activities through this helpline.
The identity of informers will be kept strictly secret. This measure encourages reporting from the public. Community involvement forms a key part of the operation's strategy.
DGP Yadav said the operation reflects Punjab Police's intensified resolve. It builds on prior efforts like arrests and module busts. International coordination efforts continue to expand.
