Punjab Police Launches Massive 72-Hour Operation Prahaar-II
In a significant escalation of law enforcement efforts, Punjab Police teams executed a sweeping crackdown on Monday, conducting a staggering 2,760 raids at locations associated with wanted criminals. This marked the first day of the newly launched Operation Prahaar-II, a 72-hour intensive campaign aimed at apprehending fugitives and enhancing public safety across the state.
High-Profile Leadership and Coordinated Efforts
The operation was spearheaded by Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, who had announced its commencement on Sunday as part of the ongoing Gangstran Te Vaar initiative. Senior officers from the Punjab Police headquarters took a hands-on approach, personally visiting various police districts to oversee and lead the raids, ensuring a coordinated and effective execution.
According to Special DGP (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla, more than 2,000 police teams, comprising approximately 12,000 personnel, were mobilized for this large-scale operation. Their efforts resulted in the rounding up of 1,895 individuals, with 1,250 arrests made. Among those detained were 40 proclaimed offenders and 298 individuals placed under preventive detention. Additionally, 666 persons were verified and subsequently released after thorough questioning, highlighting the operation's focus on targeted enforcement.
Simultaneous Drive Against Drug Trafficking
In a parallel effort, Punjab Police continued its relentless campaign against narcotics, known as Yudh Nashian Virudh, which entered its 345th day on Monday. During this phase, 72 drug smugglers were arrested, and significant contraband was seized, including 26.4 kg of heroin, 772 intoxicant tablets or capsules, and drug money amounting to Rs 12.17 lakhs.
Special DGP Arpit Shukla emphasized the broader impact of this anti-drug initiative, noting that the total number of drug smugglers arrested has now reached 48,331 in just 345 days. Furthermore, as part of de-addiction efforts, the police successfully convinced 21 individuals to undergo rehabilitation treatment, underscoring a holistic approach to combating substance abuse.
Objectives and Future Implications
Operation Prahaar-II represents a critical component of Punjab's strategy to dismantle criminal networks and curb illegal activities. By focusing on wanted criminals and integrating anti-drug operations, the police aim to create a safer environment for residents. The high number of raids and arrests on the first day signals a robust commitment to law and order, with authorities expected to maintain this momentum throughout the 72-hour period.
This crackdown not only targets immediate threats but also serves as a deterrent to potential offenders, reinforcing the state's resolve to uphold justice. As the operation progresses, further updates on arrests and seizures are anticipated, with Punjab Police leveraging this initiative to strengthen community trust and security.
