Pune Woman Cheated of Rs 59 Lakh in Elaborate Matrimonial Scam
In a distressing case of online deception, the Chandannagar police in Pune have officially registered a criminal complaint against a man from Talegaon Dabhade and several of his relatives. The accused are alleged to have systematically defrauded a 44-year-old woman residing in Wadgaonsheri of a staggering sum of Rs 59 lakh. The fraud was perpetrated under the false pretense of marriage, exploiting the victim's trust and emotional vulnerability.
How the Matrimonial Scam Unfolded
According to detailed statements from an investigating officer at the Chandannagar police station, the entire fraudulent scheme began in the year 2024. The victim, seeking companionship, met the primary accused through a popular online matrimonial website. After initial interactions, the man formally proposed marriage to her in November of that same year.
Upon her acceptance of the proposal, the accused swiftly changed tactics. He began approaching the woman for financial assistance, citing various urgent and convincing pretexts. Each time, he provided assurances of a quick repayment, leveraging the promise of their impending wedding to build credibility and trust.
Systematic Financial Exploitation Over Nearly a Year
The officer further elaborated that the period of financial exploitation was extensive and calculated. Between November 2024 and October 2025, the accused successfully extracted a total of approximately Rs 62 lakh from the victim through a series of transactions.
During this nearly year-long period, the accused made only a token repayment of Rs 3 lakh, leaving a massive deficit of Rs 59 lakh. When the woman, growing increasingly anxious, began to persistently demand the return of her substantial funds, the situation turned hostile. The accused, allegedly aided by his relatives, responded not with restitution but with verbal abuse and direct threats, intensifying her distress.
Legal Action and Ongoing Police Investigation
Faced with threats and the stark realization that she had been ruthlessly cheated in a elaborate scam, the victim gathered her courage and approached the Chandannagar police to file a formal complaint. Based on her testimony and the evidence presented, the police have registered a case against the man and his involved relatives.
The charges pertain to cheating, criminal breach of trust, and criminal intimidation. The investigating officer confirmed that a thorough probe is currently active and underway. Police teams are working to gather further evidence, track financial trails, and locate the accused to bring them to justice. This case highlights the severe risks associated with online matrimonial platforms and the importance of extreme caution in financial dealings, even with individuals who appear trustworthy.
