Pune Man Crushed by Water Tanker: Owner and Driver Face Severe Charges

A tragic road accident in Pune's Hadapsar area has resulted in the death of a 43-year-old man, with police taking unprecedented legal action against those responsible. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon, highlighting critical safety failures in commercial vehicle operations.

Fatal Collision at Ravi Darshan Bus Stop

The victim, identified as Pratik Sheth, a resident of Rasta Peth, was traveling to Urali Kanchan for work on his scooter. At approximately 1:45 PM, as he approached the Ravi Darshan bus stop in Hadapsar, a speeding water tanker struck his vehicle. The impact caused Sheth to fall from his scooter, and he was subsequently crushed under the wheels of the massive tanker.

Driver Flees Scene, Later Apprehended

Following the collision, the tanker driver, Avinash Jadhav (33), a Hadapsar resident, abandoned the vehicle at the accident site and attempted to escape. Police launched an immediate manhunt and successfully apprehended Jadhav, taking him into custody for questioning and legal proceedings.

Investigation Reveals Multiple Safety Violations

Police officials conducting the investigation uncovered alarming safety deficiencies. The water tanker was not equipped with a mandatory 360-degree camera system, and there was no cleaner present to assist the driver with visibility and navigation. Furthermore, investigators determined that Jadhav failed to stop the vehicle immediately after the initial collision, which directly led to Sheth being run over by the tanker's wheels.

"The combination of these safety violations and the driver's actions created a perfect storm of negligence," explained a senior police officer involved in the case. "The absence of basic safety equipment and the failure to stop after impact demonstrate a reckless disregard for human life."

Culpable Homicide Charges Under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita

Due to the severity of the safety violations and the circumstances of the incident, the Hadapsar police have registered a case under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against both the tanker owner and driver Jadhav. This charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder represents a significant escalation from the typical "rash and negligent driving" charges filed in most road accident cases.

The decision to pursue culpable homicide charges reflects the police's assessment that the safety failures were not merely accidental but demonstrated a willful disregard for established safety protocols. This legal approach sends a strong message about accountability in commercial vehicle operations and road safety enforcement.

The case continues to develop as investigators gather additional evidence and prepare for legal proceedings against both the tanker owner and the driver. The tragic death of Pratik Sheth has sparked renewed discussions about commercial vehicle safety standards and enforcement mechanisms in Pune and surrounding areas.
