Pune Police Implement Strict Helmet Mandate for All Personnel Following State Directive
The Pune city police have officially implemented a mandatory helmet rule for all police personnel traveling on two-wheelers, acting on direct orders from the state director general of police (DGP) office. This significant move aims to enhance road safety and set a proper example for the general public.
State DGP Circular Mandates Helmet Usage Across Maharashtra
The state DGP office issued a comprehensive circular on Friday, directing all police personnel across Maharashtra to wear helmets while riding two-wheelers. The order specifically noted that, with the exception of Mumbai and Nagpur, police personnel in other parts of the state frequently neglect this crucial safety measure.
In Pune, where police personnel have often been observed riding without helmets, the city traffic police have now begun rigorous enforcement of this mandate among their own staff. This initiative represents a proactive approach to addressing a longstanding safety concern within the force.
Police Leadership Emphasizes Leading by Example
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Himmat Jadhav emphasized the importance of police personnel setting the right standard for citizens. "Police must lead by example. The helmet rule has been implemented for all police staff in the city," Jadhav stated firmly. He highlighted that this rule applies universally, from constables to senior officers, without exception.
To ensure compliance, the Pune traffic police have distributed helmets to their personnel across multiple police stations. This practical measure aims to eliminate any barriers to adherence and demonstrates the department's commitment to safety.
Citizen Participation Encouraged Through Digital Reporting
In an innovative approach to enforcement, Jadhav appealed directly to citizens to report any police personnel seen riding without helmets. "We are encouraging citizens to take photographs of police personnel not wearing helmets, along with the registration numbers of their two-wheelers, using the Pune Traffic Police (PTP) application. We will take strict action against violators," he added.
This citizen-centric strategy leverages technology to enhance accountability. Additionally, the police plan to utilize CCTV camera footage to identify and penalize personnel who fail to comply with the helmet requirement.
Background: State DGP Review Meeting Spurs Action
The directive follows a recent review meeting held by state DGP Sadanand Date in Nagpur earlier this month. During this meeting, Date observed alarmingly low helmet usage among police personnel riding two-wheelers across Maharashtra and expressed serious concerns about this safety lapse.
His observations prompted the statewide circular and subsequent enforcement actions in cities like Pune. The initiative reflects a broader effort to improve safety standards within the police force and promote responsible behavior on the roads.
Jadhav reiterated the department's commitment to this rule, stating, "We will fine all police personnel, including constables and officers, if they are found riding without helmets." This zero-tolerance policy underscores the seriousness with which the Pune police are approaching this safety mandate.
