Pune Motorcyclist Faces Charges for Allegedly Abusing Police Constable During Traffic Stop
In a recent incident highlighting tensions during Pune's ongoing traffic enforcement drive, the Bibvewadi police have registered a case against a 31-year-old motorcycle rider from Undri. The individual, who operates a shop in the area, is accused of verbally abusing a police constable after being stopped for triple-riding on Thursday evening.
Details of the Incident
The altercation occurred around 9 PM on Bibvewadi Road, off the Pune-Satara Road, as the rider was traveling towards Swargate from Undri. Police personnel, who are actively cracking down on triple-seat violations, spotted the motorcycle carrying three passengers and signaled it to stop.
Upon halting, a 52-year-old constable began issuing a challan (traffic fine). However, the situation escalated when the rider reportedly raised his voice, disputing the police's authority to stop him. When instructed to pay the fine, the rider allegedly resorted to abusive language directed at the constable.
The constable immediately detained the rider on the spot, and he was taken to the police station for further action. A formal complaint was lodged by the constable on Friday morning, leading to the registration of the case. The motorcycle rider was subsequently released after being served a notice, pending legal proceedings.
Broader Context of Pune's Traffic Enforcement
This incident is part of a larger, continuous effort by Pune city traffic police to curb dangerous riding practices. According to official data, police have so far caught 5,380 two-wheeler riders for triple-seat violations and imposed fines totaling Rs 1.03 crore. Additionally, over 3,000 two-wheelers have been seized during this intensive drive.
The crackdown aims to enhance road safety and reduce accidents caused by overloading on motorcycles, a common issue in urban areas.
Not an Isolated Case
This is not the first instance of alleged abuse against police personnel in Pune. In January of last year, the Warje police registered a case against a 26-year-old woman from Warje for using criminal force against a public servant on duty. That incident occurred after a woman police constable stopped the rider for driving on the wrong side of the road.
Such cases underscore the challenges faced by law enforcement officers while implementing traffic rules, often leading to confrontations with violators.
The Bibvewadi police are continuing their investigation into the recent case, emphasizing the importance of respecting authority and adhering to traffic regulations for public safety.
