Suspect Apprehended in Connection with Pune Office Firing
Maharashtra Police have arrested a suspected member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang from Rajasthan in connection with a firing incident at a Pune businessman's office. The arrest was made late Wednesday night following a coordinated operation with Rajasthan Police.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening when unidentified assailants opened fire at the office of a prominent real estate developer in the Baner area of Pune. No injuries were reported, but the attack sent shockwaves through the local business community.
Gang Claims Responsibility via Social Media
Shortly after the firing, a social media post purportedly from the Lawrence Bishnoi gang claimed responsibility for the attack. The post alleged that the businessman had been warned previously about his involvement in land disputes. Police are verifying the authenticity of the post.
According to sources, the arrested suspect, identified as 28-year-old Vikram Singh, is a known associate of the Bishnoi gang and was hiding in a village near Jaipur. He is being brought to Pune for further interrogation.
Police Investigation and Background
Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar stated, "We have arrested one suspect and are on the lookout for two more individuals. The investigation is progressing, and we are working to uncover the entire network behind this attack." The police have also increased security around the businessman's residence and office.
The Lawrence Bishnoi gang, originally from Rajasthan, has been involved in several high-profile crimes, including extortion and murders, primarily in North India. Their recent activities in Maharashtra have raised concerns about the gang's expanding footprint.
Impact on Business Community
The firing has sparked fear among Pune's business circles, with many demanding stricter security measures. The local chamber of commerce has urged the government to take decisive action against organized crime. This incident also highlights the growing nexus between land disputes and criminal gangs in the region.
Police have recovered a motorcycle and two mobile phones from the suspect, which may provide leads to the other accused. Further arrests are expected in the coming days.
