Pune Couple Fatally Struck by Truck in Bhamboli Intersection Crash

A devastating road accident on the Chakan–Talegaon Road in Pune has claimed the lives of a young couple, highlighting critical safety concerns at unmarked intersections. The victims, identified as Manohar Shivram Mengale (36) and his wife Geeta (34), both residents of Bhamboli village in Khed taluka, succumbed to severe injuries after a truck collided with their motorcycle around 3:40 PM on Saturday.

Details of the Tragic Incident

According to Senior Inspector Digambar Suryavanshi of the North Mhalunge police, Manohar was operating the motorcycle while Geeta rode pillion as they attempted to cross the Chakan–Talegaon Road at the Bhamboli village intersection. The couple was en route to a nearby farm for work when the tragedy unfolded. The truck, traveling from Chakan towards Talegaon, struck the motorcycle as it reached the middle of the intersection, an area lacking a divider and characterized by an open crossing amid numerous industrial units.

Police Investigation and Legal Action

The North Mhalunge police have registered a case against the truck driver, also a resident of Bhamboli, for rash and negligent driving. Inspector Suryavanshi stated, "We suspect that the truck driver neglected the road condition at the spot and also neglected the presence of the motorcycle riders." The couple sustained critical injuries to their heads, faces, hands, and shoulders, leading to their untimely deaths. The case was formally filed on Sunday, underscoring the urgency of addressing road safety lapses in industrial zones.

Broader Implications for Road Safety

This incident raises alarming questions about infrastructure deficiencies on busy routes like the Chakan–Talegaon Road. The absence of dividers and proper signage at intersections, particularly in areas dense with industrial activity, poses significant risks to commuters. Authorities are urged to reassess traffic management and implement safety measures to prevent similar tragedies. The community mourns the loss of the Mengale couple, whose deaths serve as a stark reminder of the perils faced by daily wage workers and rural residents navigating hazardous roads.

As investigations continue, local residents and advocacy groups call for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and improved road design to safeguard lives in Pune's expanding industrial corridors.
