Pune Police Constable Takes Swift Action Against Drunk School Van Driver

A vigilant police constable from the Pimpri Chinchwad traffic branch in Pune demonstrated remarkable courage and presence of mind on Monday when she discovered that the driver of a school van, which was carrying her two daughters along with other students, was operating the vehicle while intoxicated.

Immediate Intervention and Apprehension

Upon noticing the driver and his assistant were under the influence of alcohol and creating a disturbance while driving, the constable immediately sprang into action. With the crucial assistance of her husband and a neighbor, she successfully apprehended both individuals and escorted them directly to the Kalewadi police station for further legal proceedings.

Assistant Inspector Vaibhav Gurav of the Kalewadi police confirmed the alarming situation, stating, "After conducting a thorough medical examination, it was conclusively established that both the driver and the person accompanying him had indeed consumed alcohol prior to operating the school van."

Legal Charges and Ongoing Investigation

The police authorities have officially registered a case against the two accused under multiple legal provisions:

  • Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, which specifically pertains to drunk driving offenses.
  • Relevant sections of the stringent Maharashtra Prohibition Act, which governs alcohol consumption and related violations in the state.

Gurav further elaborated on the procedural steps taken, noting, "Formal notices have been issued to both individuals, and they have been instructed to fully cooperate with the ongoing police investigation into this serious matter."

Constable's Account of the Incident

The police constable, who had personally hired the van service to ensure safe transportation for her daughters to and from school, recounted the distressing incident. She explained that while picking up her children around 3 PM, she immediately detected signs of intoxication in both the driver and his companion, who were behaving erratically and causing a commotion during the drive.

"There were a total of six students, including my own daughters, inside the van at that critical moment," she emphasized. "I promptly contacted my husband, who independently verified that both men were visibly drunk. With the invaluable support of our neighbor, we managed to take the driver and his assistant into custody and brought them to the Kalewadi police station without delay."

Medical Confirmation and License Suspension

Following the initial apprehension, the police escorted the duo to the civic hospital located in Thergaon for comprehensive medical testing. The results from these tests provided definitive confirmation of alcohol consumption, solidifying the case against them.

Gurav affirmed, "Our investigation is actively progressing, and we are meticulously examining all aspects of this incident." An officer from the Pimpri Chinchwad police department added a significant update, revealing, "We will be submitting a detailed report to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) recommending the immediate suspension of the driver's license, given the grave nature of the offense and the potential risk to children's safety."

This incident underscores the critical importance of vigilance and prompt action in ensuring the safety of schoolchildren during their daily commutes, while also highlighting the severe legal consequences faced by those who engage in drunk driving, especially when minors are involved.
