Pregnant Woman Brutally Murdered in Hyderabad Apartment by Ex-Husband
In a shocking incident that has sent shockwaves through Hyderabad, a three-month pregnant woman was brutally hacked to death inside her residence in Vanasthalipuram on Wednesday. The alleged perpetrator is her ex-husband, who police say was deeply unhappy about her recent remarriage.
Details of the Gruesome Attack
The victim, identified as 29-year-old Sunitha, was working from home when the attack occurred around noon. According to Vanasthalipuram police, her ex-husband, Devarakonda Mahesh, forcibly entered her fourth-floor apartment at Green City Colony. He carried a bag containing two knives, a bottle of petrol, and a chainsaw.
"Mahesh went straight to the room where Sunitha was and locked it from inside," explained Inspector T Mahesh. "After a heated argument, he attacked her with the knives, stabbing her multiple times on various parts of her body, including her head."
Family members rushed to the room upon hearing screams, only to find Sunitha lying on the floor in a pool of blood. By that time, the accused had locked himself in the washroom. At the moment of the attack, Sunitha's mother-in-law was on the terrace drying clothes, while her brother-in-law was working in another room.
Background of the Troubled Relationship
Both Sunitha and Mahesh were software professionals who had lived briefly in Canada after their marriage in 2022. From the beginning, their relationship was reportedly strained. Eventually, in 2024, Sunitha filed for divorce and returned to India.
In early 2025, she married another man and began living in Vanasthalipuram. Prior to this tragic incident, Sunitha had filed a domestic violence complaint against Mahesh, leading authorities to issue a Look Out Circular (LOC) against him.
Police Investigation and Motive
Deputy Commissioner of Police B Anuradha from L B Nagar revealed that Mahesh had returned to India last year following his mother's passing. "He was intercepted by police at the airport as a LOC had been issued in his name in connection with the pending domestic violence case filed by Sunitha," she stated. "Subsequently, his passport was seized."
The DCP added, "Since he could not return to Canada because of the LOC, he was disappointed. He also held a grudge against Sunitha for remarrying and wanted to seek revenge."
Police responded promptly after being alerted by Sunitha's in-laws and had to break open the bathroom door to apprehend the accused. A murder case has been officially registered against Mahesh.
Broader Implications
This tragic case highlights several critical issues:
- The persistence of domestic violence even after separation
- The vulnerability of women during pregnancy
- The challenges in preventing violence despite legal measures like LOCs
- The psychological impact of failed relationships turning violent
The investigation continues as authorities work to gather additional evidence and build a comprehensive case against the accused.
