Police Rescue Dalit Woman from Wazzar Dam After Multiple Suicide Attempts
In a dramatic intervention, rural police officers in Maharashtra successfully saved the life of a 26-year-old Dalit woman from Paratwada on Monday. The woman had attempted to commit suicide by jumping into the Wazzar Dam, marking what authorities describe as her sixth or seventh such attempt in recent times.
Background of the Alleged Crime and Relationship
According to rural LCB PI Kiran Wankhade, the woman was in a relationship with a man who is now accused of raping her under the false pretext of marriage. When the man refused to honor his promise to marry her, the distressed woman filed an official complaint with the Paratwada police station.
The police promptly registered a case of rape against the accused and took him into custody. Following his arrest, the accused reportedly gave assurances to the woman that he would marry her, leading her to make a submission in court on his behalf.
Court Proceedings and Subsequent Betrayal
Based on the woman's submission, the court granted bail to the accused. However, soon after his release from jail, the man backtracked on his commitment to marry her. This betrayal plunged the woman into a deep state of depression, exacerbating her emotional turmoil.
SP Vishal Anand clarified that this particular case is not connected to the ongoing Paratwada sexual exploitation investigation being conducted by rural police. He emphasized that the incidents are separate and require distinct legal attention.
Police Response and Ongoing Situation
The rural police's timely action at Wazzar Dam prevented a tragic outcome, highlighting their vigilance in crisis situations. This rescue underscores the broader issues of gender-based violence and mental health challenges faced by victims in such cases.
Authorities continue to monitor the woman's condition while pursuing legal avenues in the rape case. The incident has sparked discussions about the need for stronger support systems and faster judicial processes to protect vulnerable individuals from such cycles of abuse and despair.
