Police Constable Among Three Arrested in Ooty Ganja Peddling Operation

In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the Ooty town central police have apprehended three individuals, including a serving police constable, on charges of peddling ganja. The arrests highlight concerns about drug peddling targeting vulnerable groups such as tourists and students in the popular hill station.

Details of the Arrested Individuals

The arrested persons have been identified as:

  • Naseer Ahamed, 26, a police constable stationed at the Ooty town central police station, originally from Namakkal.
  • Cruz, 26, a resident of Ooty, who was initially intercepted during the operation.
  • Mohana Sundaram, 34, hailing from Attapadi in Kerala, alleged to be the supplier.

How the Operation Unfolded

The case came to light during a routine vehicle check conducted by police on Wednesday night. Officers intercepted Cruz and discovered ganja in his possession, leading to his immediate arrest. During subsequent investigations, Cruz revealed that he had procured the contraband along with constable Naseer Ahamed from Mohana Sundaram.

Upon learning about Cruz's arrest, constable Naseer Ahamed allegedly went absconding, prompting the formation of three special police teams to track him down. The teams successfully traced him to Coimbatore, where he was apprehended. Following this, police took Naseer and Cruz to Kottathara near Attapadi, where they arrested Mohana Sundaram on Friday.

Significant Seizure and Legal Actions

During the arrest of Mohana Sundaram, authorities seized a substantial quantity of 17.5 kg of ganja from his residence. A case has been registered under the stringent Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and all three accused have been remanded to judicial custody, underscoring the seriousness of the charges.

Departmental Repercussions and Ongoing Probe

In response to the incident, Nilgiris superintendent of police N S Nisha placed constable Naseer Ahamed under suspension on Saturday. Additionally, disciplinary actions were taken against other officers: Ooty town central police sub-inspector Arun was transferred to Gudalur, and special branch cop Jayakumar was transferred to Devala. These transfers followed allegations that they failed to report the incident to their superior officers in a timely manner.

Police have initiated a thorough investigation to determine whether any other police personnel might be involved in ganja peddling activities in Ooty. This probe aims to root out any potential corruption or complicity within the force, ensuring accountability and public trust.

The arrests and subsequent actions reflect a concerted effort by law enforcement to combat drug trafficking in the region, particularly when it involves individuals in positions of authority. The case serves as a stark reminder of the challenges in policing and the importance of integrity within the ranks.
