Jalandhar Police Arrest Suspect in Dramatic Shootout Following Attack on Sarpanch
In a significant development, police in Jalandhar on Wednesday arrested a man following a violent shootout. This incident is directly connected to the brutal attempt on the life of Bute Dia Chhana sarpanch and Jamhoori Kisan Sabha leader Mohinder Singh, which occurred on February 28.
Background of the February 28 Attack
The earlier attack involved five assailants armed with kirpans and iron rods, who inflicted serious injuries on Mohinder Singh. According to statements from villagers and the Kisan Sabha, the attack was motivated by Singh's vocal opposition to local drug peddlers, highlighting tensions in the community.
Senior Superintendent of Police Harvinder Singh Virk confirmed that all five accused individuals were identified in the aftermath. The investigation has been ongoing, with authorities working diligently to apprehend those responsible.
Wednesday's Shootout and Arrest
The arrest unfolded when one of the accused, identified as Sukhjit Singh alias Shilu, was observed moving suspiciously in the Mehatpur area. In response, a special police checkpoint, or naka, was established on the Mehatpur–Nakodar road by a team from the Mehatpur police station.
At the checkpoint, police signaled Sukhjit Singh to stop. However, he allegedly responded by opening fire at the officers, escalating the situation into a dangerous confrontation. Police retaliated in self-defense, shooting him in the leg to neutralize the threat.
Sukhjit Singh was immediately taken to the local civil hospital for medical treatment. His condition is being monitored as the legal process proceeds.
