In a significant breakthrough, the Udupi district police have arrested a notorious interstate thief with a long criminal history spanning multiple states. The arrest led to the successful recovery of stolen property, showcasing effective inter-state police coordination.
Notorious Criminal Finally Apprehended
The accused has been identified as Umesh, also known as Umesh Balegar or Umesh Reddy, aged 47. His arrest on January 2 came in connection with a theft case registered at the Kaup police station. Police records reveal the sheer scale of his alleged criminal activities, with over 30 cases registered against him in various police stations across Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh.
Confession and the Trail to Madurai
During detailed interrogation following his arrest, Umesh confessed to a specific theft incident. He admitted to breaking into the house of Raghavendra Kini on Kaup Main Road in Mallaru village on December 4. After stealing gold ornaments from the residence, he traveled to Madurai in Tamil Nadu to sell the stolen items.
Acting swiftly on this crucial information, a specialized police team was formed. The operation was conducted under the leadership of in-charge DSP of Karkala subdivision, Prabhu DT. The on-ground team was led by Kaup police inspector Azamath Ali and included personnel from the Crime Detection Squad.
Recovery Operation Crosses State Borders
In a meticulous recovery operation, the police team took the accused to Madurai. Based on his identification and directions, the investigators successfully traced the path of the stolen property. The efforts culminated in the recovery and seizure of a gold ingot weighing 55 grams.
This operation highlights several key aspects of modern policing:
- Inter-State Coordination: Effective collaboration across state lines was crucial for the recovery.
- Investigation Methodology: Leveraging the accused's confession for a concrete recovery operation.
- Persistent Crime Tracking: Focusing on a repeat offender with a pan-state crime record.
The arrest and recovery bring relief to the affected victim and demonstrate the police's commitment to pursuing criminals who operate across jurisdictional boundaries. The Kaup police are likely to investigate further to potentially link the accused to other unsolved thefts in the region.
