Major Drug Bust in West Champaran: Police Arrest Smuggler, Seize 2.53 Kg Hashish

In a significant crackdown on narcotics trafficking, police in West Champaran district successfully apprehended a drug smuggler and seized a substantial quantity of hashish near the Pandai river on Monday. The operation, conducted in the Gaunaha police station area of Bettiah, resulted in the confiscation of 2.53 kilograms of hashish along with a motorcycle used for transportation.

Details of the Arrest and Seizure

The arrested individual has been identified as Mohammad Ashad (39), a resident of Basvariya Parad Tola under the Lauriya police station jurisdiction in the same district. According to Shaurya Suman, the Superintendent of Police (SP) for West Champaran, law enforcement acted swiftly on a credible tip-off regarding a smuggler transporting hashish on a motorcycle.

Upon receiving the information, police teams immediately cordoned off the suspected area and initiated thorough vehicle checks. During this operation, they intercepted Mohammad Arshad and recovered the illicit substance from his possession. The seized hashish, weighing precisely 2.53 kg, was found concealed on the motorcycle, highlighting the smuggler's attempt to evade detection.

Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigation

Following the arrest, an FIR (First Information Report) has been registered at the Gaunaha police station under relevant sections of the NDPS Act (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act). This legal framework is crucial for prosecuting drug-related offenses in India, ensuring stringent penalties for those involved in such illegal activities.

SP Shaurya Suman emphasized that the investigation is far from over. Police are now diligently working to ascertain the source of the contraband and unravel the broader network involved in this drug trafficking operation. This effort aims to dismantle the supply chain and prevent future incidents, underscoring the commitment of West Champaran authorities to combat narcotics trade in the region.

The location of the bust, near the Pandai river in Gaunaha, is strategically significant, as such areas often serve as transit points for illegal activities. This successful operation not only disrupts local drug distribution but also sends a strong message to criminal elements operating in and around Bettiah.
