As Patna gears up for New Year festivities, the city police have rolled out an extensive security and traffic management blueprint to handle large crowds and ensure public order. The plan specifically addresses the distinct patterns of gatherings expected on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
Strategic Deployment Across Key Locations
Patna Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kartikeya Sharma outlined the strategy on Sunday. He noted that on December 31, thousands typically converge at popular hubs like Marine Drive and Atal Path, as well as major malls and hotels. Police forces have been pre-emptively deployed in these zones.
For January 1, the focus shifts to religious sites and recreational spots. Massive gatherings are anticipated at Mahavir Mandir, gurdwaras, temples, and churches, alongside parks such as Rajdhani Vatika (Eco Park) and Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park (Patna Zoo). Heavy police presence is planned for these areas, malls, and popular eateries.
In total, approximately 800 police personnel, including officers and constables, will be on duty across Patna's urban areas to guarantee peaceful celebrations.
Traffic Control and Women's Safety Measures
To prevent congestion, the police have identified several no-parking zones citywide. Route diversions will be implemented as needed, and barricades will be installed in high-traffic areas to deter illegal parking. SSP Sharma also appealed to volunteers from social organisations to assist with crowd management.
A special emphasis is being placed on curbing reckless driving. "We will keep a strict eye on biker gangs roaming in the city," Sharma warned. He stated that strict action will be taken against traffic violators, including those performing stunts, noting that measures have already been initiated against such youths in areas like Marine Drive.
For safety on the Ganga riverfront, boating activities will be tightly regulated. "Boat operations will only be allowed if safety standards are strictly followed," the SSP affirmed.
Ensuring a Safe Environment for Women
Prioritising women's safety, Sharma highlighted the role of the Shakti Suraksha Dal. This dedicated team will remain active to promptly address any harassment or offensive behaviour towards women and girls. Women are encouraged to contact the team immediately and to report any issues to the police without fear.
With these layered measures, the Patna Police aim to usher in the New Year smoothly, ensuring that celebrations are both joyful and secure for all residents and visitors.
