SIT Uncovers Crucial Evidence in Patna Medical Student Death Investigation
After conducting an intensive week-long investigation spanning from Patna to Jehanabad, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the suspicious death of an 18-year-old medical aspirant at a Patna girls' hostel has revealed significant findings that shed new light on the tragic incident.
Parents' Admission About Antidepressant Medication
The investigation team disclosed that during detailed interrogation, the girl's parents admitted they were aware of her access to antidepressant medication. According to officials, the young woman allegedly consumed an overdose of this medication, which ultimately led to her untimely death. This admission marks a crucial turning point in the investigation, contradicting earlier narratives presented by the family.
CCTV Evidence Refutes Missing Clothes Allegation
The SIT has categorically refuted the family's public allegations regarding the supposed disappearance of the victim's clothes following her hospital admission. The girl's mother had repeatedly questioned in media interviews, "Where are my daughter's clothes? Why did the hostel, the hospital, or the police throw them away?" asserting these items were vital forensic evidence.
However, officials presented compelling CCTV footage from January 6 at the private hospital, which clearly shows the clothes being handed directly to the parents upon admission. "We have the electronic evidence. The family hid the clothes and falsely claim it was destroyed by the police and hospital," a senior official stated, highlighting significant inconsistencies in the family's narrative.
Medication Source and Purchase Details
Police investigations revealed that the antidepressants in question actually belonged to the victim's father, who had been prescribed the medication for several years. On December 27, 2025, he purchased six strips of the medication from a local medical shop in Jehanabad at 4:24 PM, with his daughter accompanying him during this transaction.
The young woman returned to Patna on January 5 with three strips of the medication, and empty packaging was later recovered from her hostel room by the warden. Statements have been recorded from both the medical shopkeeper and the driver hired that day, who confirmed the detour made specifically for the medication purchase.
Investigation Findings and Family Statements
"After hours of questioning in Jehanabad, the parents acknowledged their knowledge of the medication and her access to it, despite earlier claims suggesting otherwise. They reportedly attempted to conceal the empty strips, initially blaming the warden," the investigating official added.
Police sources indicated these findings, combined with evidence from the victim's personal diary detailing:
- Academic stress and pressure
- Family disputes and tensions
- Past relationship breakup
- Depression symptoms
- Suicidal thoughts
have clarified most ambiguities surrounding the case. No suspicious activity appeared on CCTV footage from her arrival on January 5 until the tragic incident occurred.
Current Investigation Status and Medical Reports
"The investigation strongly indicates suicide by antidepressant overdose with no evidence of foul play or sexual assault in Patna," sources confirmed. However, the team awaits the final medical opinion from AIIMS Patna and the Forensic Science Laboratory report, which are expected by January 27.
The girl's maternal uncle expressed surprise at the recent developments, stating he was unaware the family knew about the medication. "My only appeal to the police is to investigate the matter and arrest the guilty, even if they are from Jehanabad," he said. The parents could not be reached for comment following these revelations.
Background of the Tragic Incident
The medical aspirant was found unconscious in her locked hostel room on January 6. Hostel staff had to break open the door to reach her, after which she was immediately rushed to a private hospital in Kadamkuan. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her condition on January 11 after remaining in a coma for several days.
The SIT continues its thorough investigation while awaiting crucial medical reports that will provide definitive conclusions about this heartbreaking case that has captured public attention across Bihar.
