Tragic Construction Collapse in Patiala Village Claims Two Lives
A devastating construction accident in Lang village near Patiala on Tuesday resulted in the deaths of two labourers and left four others with serious injuries. The incident occurred when a partially constructed lintel gave way during roof elevation work at a house where a room was being built for livestock.
Details of the Fatal Incident
According to official information, the mishap took place at the residence of a local villager while workers were attempting to raise the height of the roof. During this critical construction phase, the lintel suddenly collapsed, trapping six individuals under the heavy debris. Among those trapped was the homeowner himself, adding to the tragedy's personal impact on the community.
The two deceased labourers have been identified as Gursewak Singh and Kuldeep Singh, both residents of Lang village. Their sudden deaths have sent shockwaves through the close-knit rural community, where such construction accidents are reportedly rare.
Injured Victims and Medical Response
Among the four injured victims, one resident along with his son sustained confirmed fractures in their legs, requiring immediate medical attention. Two other workers were also hospitalized with various injuries sustained during the collapse. All injured individuals were rushed to a private hospital in Patiala for emergency treatment.
Medical sources revealed that some victims were initially admitted to Government Medical College and Rajindra Hospital before being referred to other facilities for specialized care. Disturbingly, two of the injured are reported to be in critical condition, raising concerns about potential long-term consequences from the accident.
Official Investigation and Community Response
DSP Jungvir Singh Randhawa along with SHO Lakhvinder Singh and other officials promptly reached the accident site after receiving information about the incident. Inspector Lakhvinder Singh stated that preliminary investigations suggest the collapse appeared to have been caused by a technical fault during the roof-elevation process, though a comprehensive investigation is ongoing.
Former sarpanch and ex-Market Committee chairman Harbans Singh described the incident as the first such tragedy in the village's recent history. He emphasized that the entire community is in mourning, with neighbors and relatives coming together to support the affected families during this difficult time.
The accident has raised questions about construction safety standards in rural areas, particularly for agricultural and livestock-related structures. As authorities continue their investigation, the focus remains on providing adequate medical care to the injured while the community grieves the loss of two local workers.
