Six Minors Accused of Gangraping Classmate in Odisha, Police Detain All
The Balangir district police in Odisha have taken into custody six minors for their alleged involvement in the gangrape of a female classmate, with one of the accused reportedly filming the horrific incident and circulating the video on social media platforms. This disturbing case has sent shockwaves through the community and raised serious concerns about juvenile crime and digital misuse.
Incident Details and Police Action
According to official reports, the incident occurred on December 27, when the victim was returning from her tuition classes. Police state that she was allegedly lured to a secluded location by one of the accused, where the gangrape took place. The victim's family approached authorities on Tuesday after a purported video of the assault went viral online, prompting immediate police intervention.
Balangir Superintendent of Police Abhilash G confirmed that investigators have seized a mobile phone containing what he described as "scientific evidence" related to the crime. The victim's statement has been recorded following a thorough medical examination, and a case has been registered under the Information Technology (IT) Act in addition to relevant sections of criminal law.
Threats and Social Media Circulation
Police revealed that the accused minors not only committed the alleged assault but also warned the victim against reporting the incident, threatening to make the video go viral if she spoke out. This intimidation tactic highlights the growing problem of using digital platforms to perpetuate and conceal crimes.
Inspector General Himansu Lal, who visited the police station to oversee the investigation, emphasized that authorities would push for a fast-track trial in this sensitive case. He also announced plans for an awareness campaign among students to prevent misuse of social media and educate youth about legal consequences.
Legal Proceedings and Support Measures
Despite the juvenile status of the accused, police indicated that the alleged mastermind, a 17-year-old, would be treated as an adult during trial proceedings. This decision reflects the gravity of the offense and the need for appropriate legal accountability.
Authorities have coordinated with officials from the district child protection unit and child welfare committee to ensure proper handling of the investigation and support for the victim. These measures aim to balance rigorous law enforcement with necessary protections for all minors involved.
This case follows another recent incident in Odisha where two individuals were arrested for gangrape near a popular tourist site, indicating concerning patterns that require sustained attention from law enforcement and community stakeholders.
