Odisha IT Professional Stranded in Doha as Flight Returns Mid-Air Amid Regional Conflict
A 32-year-old IT professional from Cuttack, Odisha, has found himself stranded in Doha, Qatar, after his connecting flight to Romania was forced to return mid-air due to escalating security concerns in the region. Prateek Dev Das, a resident of Tinikonia Bazar in Cuttack, had embarked on his journey from Bengaluru to Romania on February 28 for an official assignment with Deloitte.
Journey Disrupted by Security Alerts
After a scheduled layover of three-and-a-half hours in Doha, Prateek's connecting flight took off but soon made an unexpected U-turn back to Qatar. The airline cited security concerns triggered by the ongoing regional conflict, which has seen heightened tensions including reported attacks and military actions in neighboring areas.
Speaking to media outlets, Prateek revealed he was stuck at Hamad International Airport for nearly 24 hours before being relocated to a hotel approximately 18 kilometers away. "I stayed at the airport for 24 hours and was later moved to a hotel. There is serious anxiety among passengers about the situation," he stated.
Personal Belongings and Health Concerns
Adding to his distress, Prateek's luggage remains with the airline, forcing him to manage without essential belongings including clothing. "We don't know how many days we would be here. I contacted the Indian embassy helpline, and they said they are looking into the matter," he explained.
Prateek estimates that nearly 40,000 travelers are currently stranded at Qatar's main airport due to widespread flight disruptions, with uncertainty continuing to prevail among all affected passengers.
Family Appeals for Government Intervention
Back in Cuttack, Prateek's father, Dev Kumar Das — a retired private sector employee — expressed deep concern about his son's wellbeing. "We are very scared. He has multiple health issues, especially severe allergies. How he is managing in such tense circumstances is a big worry for us," the concerned father shared.
The family has urgently appealed to both the Odisha state government and the central government of India to intervene. "We request the governments of Odisha and India to ensure his safe and early return," Dev Kumar Das emphasized, calling on the Ministry of External Affairs to facilitate the safe repatriation of stranded Indian citizens.
